Zion Leadership & Adventure Program

Learn • Lead • Prepare

A Christ-centered program for young men and young women ages 11 to 18. Youth grow through campouts, service, leadership and real responsibility at home, and they record every step in a field journal of their own.

What ZLAP is

Raising disciples of Jesus Christ who can lead

ZLAP helps youth become faithful disciples of Jesus Christ, capable leaders, devoted family members, responsible citizens, self-reliant adults and confident outdoorsmen and women.

It supports the Church's Children and Youth effort and builds on what youth are already doing at church, at home, at school and on the trail. Each youth works through three stages over seven years, with requirements spread across seven pillars.

Most of the work happens in ordinary life. A month of daily prayer. Cooking dinner for the family. A five-mile hike. Helping a younger kid who is having a hard time. A parent or leader signs off on each one.

By 18, a ZLAP youth is ready to

  • Follow Jesus Christ with faith and conviction
  • Honor and strengthen their family
  • Lead and serve others
  • Be a responsible citizen
  • Take care of themselves and the people who depend on them
  • Appreciate and care for God's creations
  • Prepare for missions, education, careers, marriage and parenthood
Three stages

Learn first. Then lead. Then prepare.

Young men advance with their priesthood quorum and young women with their class, so each stage lines up with a group youth are already part of on Sunday.

Seven pillars

Seven areas of growth

Every stage has requirements in the same seven pillars. Finish a pillar and you earn its bar (young men) or jewel (young women).

How it works

A workbook in hand, progress in the app

The workbook is the youth's own record. The ZLAP app keeps the same progress in one place so leaders and parents can see where things stand.

Work the requirements

Each stage has its own workbook with the requirements, goal pages, campout logs, service records and room for journal entries and testimony.

Get it verified

A parent, guardian or leader signs off as each requirement is finished. Plenty of them count things youth already do at home, at school, in sports or at work.

Earn the coin

A bar or jewel goes into the workbook for each finished pillar. All seven earns that stage's Compass Challenge Coin.
